Emotions RE Amputations

Going through an amputation secondary to an IED would make anyone feel angry. Compound that with the Grieving Process. The grieving process is not a linear healing process. But- there are stages of grieving everyone goes through.
1. Denial - Believing it can't be true. Dreaming you can walk.
2. Blaming. Blaming God and anyone else for what happened.
3. Bargaining- usually before the amputation. Begging the doctor to find another way to fix your leg or arm. Begging God for healing.
4.Depression.- Sleeping too much or not enough. Feelings of hopelessness and suicide. Not eating or eating excessively. No interest in former activities. Irritability.
5. Acceptance and Hope- Realization that while some changes have to be made, one can find the strength to go on. Speaking with someone who "went through the process" helps you heal.
The biggest adjustment is to your body image. Fears your loved one will no longer find you attractive. Everyone's body changes as we go through time. Love won't change how your loved one feels about you.

It's important to share what's going on "inside" Otherwise- it will eat you from the inside to the out.

I invite all of you to share your experiences and provide a community of support for everyone dealing with PTSD, TBI and IED related amputations.

God Bless-
ANJYL
